AIIM Study Reveals AI-Driven Transformation in Document Processing

78% of Companies Now Operational with AI Technology

Silver Spring, Maryland and Washington, DC, USA –  August 13, 2025 – The Association for Intelligent Information Management (AIIM) in partnership with Deep Analysis, today released the "Market Momentum Index: Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) Survey 2025," revealing dramatic shifts in how organizations approach AI-powered document processing.

The comprehensive study, underwritten by SER Group, DocuWare, infocap.ai, and Pyramid Solutions, surveyed 600 enterprises across the United States, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The research demonstrates a fundamental transformation in the IDP landscape, with 78% of companies now operational with AI technology—a dramatic leap that signals the end of the "AI hype cycle" skepticism that dominated discussions just a year ago.

"AI and unstructured data management aren't just partners—they're a powerhouse duo," said Tori Miller Liu, CIP, President & CEO of AIIM. "This research provides a clear picture on how forward-thinking organizations are converting data complexity into AI-driven advantage.”

Major Market Disruption Underway

The survey reveals unprecedented market disruption, with 66% of new IDP projects planning to replace existing systems. This high vendor turnover reflects how generative AI and large language models have fundamentally disrupted traditional approaches to document processing.

"The rise of GenAI and LLMs has disrupted the market," noted Liu. "For success with AI, the report shows the importance of managing unstructured data across a growing multitude of systems; the need for enterprise automation and a holistic, end-to-end approach to workflow automation."

Key Findings Include:

  •  Massive Adoption Growth: 78% of companies are now operational with AI, representing a dramatic shift from previous concerns about stalled projects and AI readiness.
  • Security Remains Top Concern: Data security and privacy emerged as the #1 challenge for IDP implementation, reflecting organizations' heightened awareness of AI governance requirements.
  • Expanding Beyond Traditional Use Cases: The survey shows a major shift from IDP's traditional back-office applications into front-office, customer-facing operations.
  • AI-Powered Vendor Research: Generative AI research has become the #1 method for finding IDP solutions.
  • Paper Persistence: Despite digital transformation efforts, 61% of IDP processes still include paper documents, with 48% expecting paper volumes to increase next year.
