Defining Intelligent Information Management

Recently AIIM released an industry watch report titled, The State of Information Management, Getting Ahead of the Digital Information Curve. In it, AIIM makes the case that every organization is on — or should be on — a Digital Transformation journey. At the heart of this transformation journey is the need to understand, anticipate and redefine internal and external customer experiences. This transformation depends on other important aspirations: business agility and innovation, operational excellence and automated compliance and information governance.

At the heart of all of this is information, the currency that fuels and funds the digital transformation journey. AIIM believes that information is an organization’s most valuable asset. It is the common denominator in customer experience, business agility, operational excellence and automation; all stem from intelligent information management.

At the same time a rising tide of information that we must manage and the ever growing chaos and confusion associated with the effort imperils the Digital Transformation journey. The volume, velocity, and variety of information within most organizations often exceeds our ability to keep pace with big content challenges.

Enter Intelligent Information Management

These challenges are creating a demand for new information management practices that extend beyond traditional Enterprise Content Management. We call this Intelligent Information Management (IIM), a roadmap that provides the following key capabilities:

  • CONTENT SERVICES: A flexible and modular approach that utilizes content and information wherever and whenever it is needed, independent of where it is stored.
  • PROCESS SERVICES: Tools that can be delivered with the simplicity of an app, but within a framework that allows the business to remain in control.
  • ANALYTICS SERVICES: Automated tools to prepare all information – both structured and unstructured -- for machine learning.

The term services is intentional, because a modern enterprise must be able to link these capabilities together on the fly to respond to a continually changing business environment. However, transforming business (and the term ECM) has never been about the technology itself; but rather, it has always been about the business improvements organizations want to make, and the many facets of managing the lifecycle of information across an enterprise that enable organizations to make them.

IIM Building Blocks

Intelligent Information Management is a practice that integrates people, processes, information, and technology to achieve digital transformation. IIM rests on these core building blocks.

AIIM is the community resource for IIM practitioners at every Digital Transformation milepost. We provide year-round programs in peer-to-peer learning, research, mentoring and certification. Indeed, the AIIM Certified Information Professional (CIP) is the most qualified navigator to lead the Digital Transformation journey. CIP’s are individuals that have mastered the IIM practice through stewardship, optimization, and application of information assets.
