New Strategy System Reimagines AIIM

2024 is going to be a special year. As we celebrate our 80th anniversary, we are also launching a brand new strategy.

This new strategy reimagines AIIM for the age of artificial intelligence where trusted data and information are essential. In the coming months, we will be sharing much more about our new strategy, but I am very excited to give you a preview of what's to come.

New Vision for Information Management in Every Organization

AIIM’s new vision is to create a world in which every organization benefits from information management to reach better business outcomes. To accomplish that vision, AIIM is reimagining its programs and content to focus on making intelligent information management as a practice more accessible and feasible for organizations of any size.

Organizations and society are better with information management. Information management is vital to ensuring readiness for artificial intelligence; creating excellent customer experiences; protecting organizational data; and automating laborious processes.

Strategy System > Strategic Plan

As opposed to a static, multi-year strategic plan, AIIM’s leadership developed a “strategy system,” which is an agile, adaptable, learning-based approached to strategic planning and execution.

If you have ever engaged with agile project management or design thinking, our new strategy system may seem familiar. The goal of a strategy system is to encourage thoughtful experimentation where we focus on what our initiatives teach us about our work and the industry itself. Our goal is to constantly seek feedback and listen to our members. We will also continue to look to the future and employ foresight to anticipate uncertainty, volatility, and risk. Our goal is to minimize potential harms, maximize opportunity, and lead the future of information management for all stakeholders.

Collaborative Effort

How did AIIM develop the strategy system? AIIM’s Board of Directors partnered with Jeff De Cagna and Foresight First LLC to develop the strategy system. The strategy was developed in collaboration with more than two hundred members and nonmembers through individual conversations, focus groups, and online collaboration.

Objectives for 2024

With the new strategy, AIIM continues its long history of promoting intelligent information management by providing future-focused and technology-enabled programs and solutions.

The strategy system includes four objectives, which represent the specific areas of work and exploration AIIM will pursue in 2024.

  1. Empower Leaders. AIIM will empower information management leaders and decision-makers with actionable guidance and solutions to help drive organizational success by growing and improving information management practices within their organizations.
  2. Expand Our Network. AIIM will build the information management practice network of the future by engaging current and new stakeholders and partners.
  3. Enable Artificial Intelligence and Innovation. AIIM will become the world’s primary resource for information management practice using artificial intelligence. AIIM will also work to enable other innovative technologies, including automation, cloud computing, and cybersecurity tools.
  4. Excel as an Organization. AIIM will become a thriving, sustainable organization.

Throughout January 2024, we are hosting member-only Town Halls where I'll be joined by board members to help introduce and answer questions about the new strategy. We'll also be sharing more about the strategy on this blog, in podcasts, and at the AIIM Conference. I look forward to sharing more with you!

I am grateful to the AIIM Board of Directors, AIIM Fellows, AIIM Leadership Council, all of the members, and association staff who contributed to this strategy. It was a year-long, massive undertaking, but the results are a new vision that empowers us to better serve members and lead the information management industry into the future.
