AI and Machine Learning: Transforming the M365 Ecosystem

Sharepoint and Office 365  |  Artificial Intelligence (AI)

When we talk about AI transforming the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, it's crucial to set the boundaries of what we mean. AI isn't new - your Netflix recommendation engine has been using AI for a decade, and Tesla's autopilot for about five years. What we're really focusing on today is how large language models (LLMs) can benefit enterprises.

Microsoft's First-Mover Advantage

Microsoft has positioned itself brilliantly with Copilot. They've gained a first-mover advantage by getting this technology into the hands of organizations quickly and widely. It's become so ubiquitous that people are calling all similar products "Copilot," even when they're not - it's almost the Band-Aid effect for large language models right now.

The Power of Enterprise-Wide Search

What Microsoft is doing with Copilot is truly game-changing. They're bringing the ability to search across all your enterprise information into what's essentially a local large language model, making it accessible at your fingertips. This is huge. It's going to transform the way we work.

Many people are already using Copilot, and adoption is strong. It's being integrated into daily workflows for both complex and simple tasks. I often hear about people using it for things like drafting job descriptions. We're also seeing a lot of efficiency gains with Copilot for developers.

The Future of AI in Enterprise Applications

Looking ahead, there are two main perspectives on how this will play out:

  1. Everyone will have an agent or Copilot they use every day.
  2. AI and large language models will be embedded in every app we use.

We're already seeing the second scenario unfold with CRM systems. They're all introducing their version of a large language model agent or query prompt to get results that traditional CRM searches couldn't provide.

Microsoft seems well-positioned for both scenarios. They've made Copilot extensible and open, allowing developers to build apps around it, which is incredibly interesting.

The Hype Cycle and Real-World Impact

We're obviously in the Gartner hype cycle right now. We've probably moved past the initial hype curve and are in the trough of disillusionment as people search for use cases and align budgets. However, what we're unanimously seeing is encouraging:

  • People are learning about AI and asking questions.
  • Organizations are discovering how to drive early efficiencies in their businesses.

These are all great signs, and I believe AI will continue to change the way we work more broadly.

Conclusion

The integration of AI, particularly large language models like Copilot, into the M365 ecosystem is not just a trend - it's a fundamental shift in how we interact with our enterprise data and tools. While we're still in the early stages, the potential for increased efficiency and productivity is enormous. As we move forward, it will be exciting to see how organizations leverage these tools to solve new problems and transform their operations.
