Powering Information: Shell's Approach for the Future of IM

Information Governance  |  Intelligent Information Management (IIM)

At Shell, we recently held an IM business strategy workshop that brought together IM business leads from different lines of business. The goal? To connect the dots between information and data management and chart our approach for the coming years.

Our key topics: Powering Information

Our discussions were based on three key topics:

  1. Return on Investment: Leveraging AI for IM and ensuring current projects deliver future savings or ROI.
  1. Prepare IM for the Future: Focusing on information management and data privacy governance to create a robust framework.
  1. Value from IM: Developing our IM business plan, exploring “green IM” for environmentally friendly practices, and standardizing and tracking IM value to demonstrate tangible benefits.

Let's break these down:

Return on Investment

Under this pillar, we're exploring how to leverage AI for IM and examining how our current projects will deliver future savings or return on investment. It's about making smart investments that will pay off in the long run.

Prepare IM for the Future

This pillar focuses on information management and data privacy governance. We're looking at how our architecture, rules, and policies all come together to create a robust framework for the future of IM.

Value from IM

Here, we're developing our IM business plan and exploring new opportunities. One exciting area is "green IM" - how can we make our information management practices more environmentally friendly? We're also working on standardization and tracking IM value to demonstrate the tangible benefits of our work.

Diverse Perspectives, Unified Goal

What makes this strategy particularly powerful is that it brings together diverse perspectives from across our business. Every single business unit looks at their information differently. For instance, the information needs and challenges in our Research and Development division are quite different from those in our Retail or Commercial arms.

However, at the end of the day, it's all Shell information, stored in the same systems. We need to be compliant across the board, but also generate value from this information. Our strategy aims to balance these needs and create a unified approach to IM that serves all parts of our business.

Looking Ahead

As we implement this strategy, we're keenly aware of the rapidly changing landscape of information management. The convergence of data and information, the rise of AI, and the increasing focus on demonstrating value are all shaping our approach.

We're excited about the future of IM at Shell and in the industry as a whole. By focusing on return on investment, future-proofing our IM practices, and continuously demonstrating the value of information, we believe we can power Shell's success in the digital age.

Remember, in the words of Peter Drucker, "The best way to predict the future is to create it." That's exactly what we're aiming to do with our "Powering Information" strategy.

This blog post is based on an original AIIM OnAir podcast. When recording podcasts, AIIM uses AI-enabled transcription in Zoom. We then use that transcription as part of a prompt with Claude Pro, Anthropic’s AI assistant. AIIM staff (aka humans) then edit the output from Claude for accuracy, completeness, and tone. In this way, we use AI to increase the accessibility of our podcast and extend the value of great content.
