The AIIM Certified Information Professional: Empowering Information Management Careers

Certified Information Professional (CIP)

In today's AI-driven world, the ability to effectively manage information is more crucial than ever. At AIIM, we're committed to empowering professionals with the knowledge and skills they need to excel in the field of unstructured data management. Our Certified Information Professional (CIP) credential stands as a testament to this commitment, providing a comprehensive framework for understanding and implementing best practices in information management.

To illustrate the real-world impact of the CIP, I'd like to share insights from two of our certified professionals who have seen firsthand how this credential can transform careers and organizations. These insights were collected and shared with us by AIIM Company of Fellow member and Chairman Jesse Wilkins, CIP.

Connecting the Dots in Information Management

Tammy Brooks, CIP, President of Indicta Ltd., an information management consulting firm, pursued the CIP certification "to tie all the pieces together, from document creation, to labeling, all the way through to disposition." This holistic approach is exactly what sets CIP apart.

Tammy's average day involves assisting companies with their taxonomy, structure, governance, and records. She notes, "It's easy to get overwhelmed in today's data." The CIP provides a framework to navigate this complexity.

Laura Wisdom, CIP, Information Architect / Manager with the Texas General Land Office, echoes this sentiment. Her role involves "evaluating our current information management practices and looking for ways to improve our processes." Laura emphasizes the importance of educating staff about sound information management practices, aiming to "demonstrate the importance and criticality of solid information management practices to our business process."

Career Advancement and Professional Recognition

For Tammy, the CIP has been a career catalyst. "The CIP has expanded and excelled my career," she shares. This certification offers a tangible demonstration of expertise that resonates with employers and clients alike.

Laura pursued the CIP because "it is a way to show I have a personal stake in information management and that there is a professional knowledge base behind it." She adds, "I do think my employer respects that I hold this certification, even if they do not fully understand what it means. For myself, it was a professional milestone, and I am glad I made the effort."

Continuous Learning and Industry Relevance

One of the key strengths of the CIP is its emphasis on ongoing education. Tammy highlights this aspect: "CIP doesn't just help address [challenges], but with the ongoing continuing education requirements, it ensures that you are current and aware of changing industry requirements."

Laura agrees, noting that renewing her CIP status "encourages me to stay current on my CEUs." She values being part of the broader CIP community, stating, "When I hear that other CIPs face the same challenges I do, and have the same passion for information management, it recharges me and sometimes makes me laugh, because the challenges are so consistent."

Starting Your CIP Journey

For those considering a career in information management or looking to enhance their current role, the CIP offers a clear path forward. Tammy's advice is straightforward: "If you are just starting, AIIM is the place to start. The network you'll build, and the knowledge and continued training support you'll gain, will move your mindset and career."

Laura adds valuable advice for newcomers: "Constant education of others within your organization about effective information management is important." She emphasizes the need to "show and explain the benefits of information management from their perspective instead of my perspective and deliberately worked to foster understanding and buy-in."

Leverage Professional Associations to Help You Prepare

At AIIM, we're proud to offer not just the CIP certification, but a comprehensive ecosystem of support, including:

- Preparation resources and training
- A global network of information management professionals
- Ongoing educational opportunities through conferences and seminars
- Up-to-date industry insights and best practices

Both Tammy and Laura stress the importance of professional associations. Laura advises, "Join professional associations, like AIIM. Having a ready network of a group of professionals is invaluable. I wish I had known about AIIM earlier in my career."

Take the Next Step

Whether you're just starting your career in information management or looking to take your expertise to the next level, the CIP credential can help you achieve your goals.
