In my decades of experience in information management, one truth has remained constant: we need to focus on the problem trying to be solved, not the new and shiny object - even if that object is AI.
Beyond the Technology Hype
AI is another technology we must incorporate into the fold, just like all the other tech that has been thrown at us over the years. But rather than getting caught up in the hype, focus on:
- Quality inputs
- Quality outputs
- The people creating and using the ins and outs
It's About the Users
Remember that at the end of the day, it's about the users and who they're trying to serve. Whether you're helping a business grow or supporting a nonprofit's mission, the focus should be on solving real problems.
Quality Data Matters
If someone says they want to implement AI, start by asking about their data:
- Is it properly tagged?
- Do you have the necessary policies and procedures in place?
- Can you ensure data quality?
- Have you cleaned out the "junk drawer"?
Clean House First
Think of data like your junk drawer at home - at some point, it gets full and needs cleaning out. Data and information are the same. Before implementing any new technology, make sure you've addressed these fundamental issues.
Looking Forward
As information management professionals, we need to insert ourselves into these conversations early. We need to be assertive and demonstrate why it's important to include teams that have been doing this for decades. The future isn't just about new technology - it's about using that technology effectively to solve real business problems.
Remember, focus on the problem first, and the right solution will follow - whether that solution involves AI or not.
