Warning to new casual readers -- past readers will know that I am a bit of a renegade in the association technology community. For example, see my post A Manifesto for Associations to Survive Disruption or my e-book lamenting the state of Association Management Systems, The AMS as We Know it is Dead. We are also a somewhat crazy association that is trying to make Hubspot the core of our business. Beyond all this, I am more engaged in social and community technologies than is probably healthy. Certainly, more than my wife finds tolerable. My personal and professional experience of over 30 years in the association space and as an ASAE member -- plus the experience of my own association with our own online community – has me asking this question:

There's a lot of value in chatting with your peers in your field of expertise. But, there's even more value when those peers are from the same industry. Often certain industries have their own unique challenges and it's beneficial to be able to connect and share. That's the basic idea behind AIIM's Special Interest Groups (SIGs). We're excited to announce our Oil and Gas SIG. Below is a quick message from John Mancini announcing the group, it's focus, and how to join. Not in the Oil and Gas Industry? Check out our full list of SIGs on the AIIM Community Site.

Making an ECM implementation successful requires planning and attention to detail. The best way to create the right solution is to identify organizational goals and priorities. Learn how to manage a successful implementation in our free guide.
As I mentioned in my previous post, I am currently out at IBM Insight and thought I would share some impressions of the event (see The Invisibility of ECM Done Properly). As an association guy, the Cognitive Computing/Watson keynote session caught my attention. Watson is now focusing on professions with a deep technical knowledge base and terminologies and technologies particular to that profession – a use case of particular interest to associations. Watson “has been learning the language of professions with the objective of democratizing information discovery and putting information in the hands of anyone who wants to use it.”

It is with great sadness that I inform the AIIM Community of the passing of our friend and colleague, Carl Weise, after a brave battle with esophageal cancer. Carl was an industry advisor/trainer with AIIM for over 8 years. He leaves behind a rich legacy of hundreds of students who benefitted from his sage advice, counsel, and experience. He was a great friend to many of us and a terrific father and husband.

I was recently speaking to Jon Eilers, SVP of Business Development at FileBound Software about the recent acquisition of FileBound by Upland Software (formerly PowerSteering Software) and its implications for the channel. Here's what he told me.

Now I don't want the title of this post to come across as haughty. I give a lot of presentations, but I would be the first to admit that I have a lot to learn. But I do try to constantly improve with each one, and so at least I have a pretty good idea of what SHOULD be done. And coming on the heels of listening to a fair number of presentations at the info360 event, let's just say I got a pretty good idea last week of the converse as well.
