After watching this "Look Back at the AIIM Conference 2017" video, it’s hard to believe that more than a month has passed since we were in Orlando. And yet, the keynotes, sessions, festivities and fireworks feel like they took place ages ago. The sheer energy rush and euphoria that characterizes a gathering of the tribe like ours has already been replaced with a “back-to-work” resoluteness. After all, we’ve got work to do, to develop the ideas exchanged and the promises made.

Two big bangs in the information management industry thrilled in Orlando at last month’s AIIM Conference: Gartner’s recent bombshell announcing the “death” of ECM and the announcement of its successor "Content Services." John Mancini’s mic drop reveals that AIIM believes the landscape has expanded beyond “ECM” – to “Intelligent Information Management.”

AIIM Conference | Certified Information Professional (CIP) | Enterprise Content Management (ECM)
Did any of us choose enterprise content management (ECM) as our career path when we joined the workforce? While there are degree programs in information studies, I think most of our paths were accidental. While we may have accidentally entered ECM, the decision to stay has been our own choice. Still, we often don’t look at ECM as our career, but at “computers” as our career. Yet I can hardly imagine a brain surgeon saying they were “just a doctor.” I know I don’t want to keep being asked if I can fix someone’s printer. I think it’s time we own our career.

The problem with most conferences is that, while they inspire and motivate onsite, they fail to provide lasting prescriptive guidelines or hacks that can be applied “back at the ranch.” This deficiency may lay with the conference program itself, lack of planning on the part of the attendee, or both. At The AIIM Conference, our goal is to ensure that your three-day investment delivers at least a year’s worth of value to you and your organization.

My name is Sean, and I used to find professional networking terrifying. The thought of it would make me cringe. I can remember being fresh out of college and attending a networking event with the hope of establishing some connections that could possibly lead to a job. Well, those were VERY high hopes, as I spent most of the night nervously hanging out by the food area awkwardly trying to engage anyone who went near the crab cakes. Needless to say, I didn't end up with a job offer that night. But, I did come to the realization that networking is not going away, and I could either keep being socially awkward, or I dedicate myself to developing this skill. With The AIIM Conference quickly approaching, I thought I'd share my best tips for networking so you can make the most of your time, when you'll be surrounded by 650 information professionals.

We introduced something new to The AIIM Conference in 2016, an element of social responsibility. As the VP of Events here at AIIM, it was incredibly important to me that we give something to a charity local to our host city of New Orleans that our attendees had created.
