In my current role as Manager of Records Services at the Atlanta Housing Authority (AHA), I am responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the records management and archives section of the agency. In addition, I serve as the Product Owner for our Document Management Automation Squared (DMA2) project. Our DMA2 project encompasses many aspects of electronic records management, including: providing new SharePoint sites, selected migration of records from old SharePoint sites and shared drives, classification, and disposition of electronic records in these repositories, deduplication of records, and training and outreach.

My role as the Director of Litigation Support and Records Management at the A&E Television Network is to get the word on records management out into the actual company so that everyone can start using those actual principles. At A&E, we have a tremendous amount of data that we are trying to go through. We are trying to reduce the scope of actual discovery and not expose ourselves to litigation risk.

In my profession, I feel like I’m constantly fighting the same battles over getting clients to destroy their older records that no longer have value for the company. I often come across these old, dusty storage rooms, or offsite storage accounts, filled with boxes and files. Usually, in one of these scenarios, there are no lists that would tell us about the actual contents of the records. One option is to do a sampling and a risk assessment to just get rid of everything. This approach is often met with resistance.
